Japhet, in search of a father
by Captain Frederick Marryat (not named in this edition, however)

Published by Saunders and Otley in London, 1836.
This is the first British edition, complete in three volumes.

Condition/notes: These three volumes measure 5"x7.5" inches, and each is around 300 pages long. Leather spines and corners, with beautiful marbled covers with matching marbling on the pages edges and endpapers. Each has an attractive armorial crest / bookplate with the text "Wingfield / Onslow, Co. Salop". Covers have light scuffing, edge wear, the gilt on the spine remains bright with the titles very clear against the red. They are in very good condition, attractive and an admirable addition to any collection. Interiors have very minimal foxing or discoloration.

Friends with Dickens, Marryat is often compared to Dickens. This particular story involves orphan, the opening paragraph is as follows: "Those who may be pleased to honor these pages with a perusal, will not be detained with a long introductory history of my birth, parentage, and education. The very title implies that, at this period of my memoirs, I was ignorant of the two first; and it will be necessary for the due development of my narrative that I allow them to remain in the same state of bliss; for in the perusal of a tale, as well as in the pilgrimage of life, ignorance of the future may truly be considered as the greatest source of happiness. The little that was known of me at this time I will however narrate as concisely, and as correctly, as I am able."
