SIGNED and inscribed by the author on front endpapers. Pasted-in letterhead on the inside cover is printed: "Tel. Hampstead 3137. / 10, Frognal, Hampstead, N.W.3." and handwritten: "Nov. 1921 / Dear Lady Auckland Geddes / Will you accept this little gift? / My wife sends her affectionate regards. / I hope this [?? unsure of what this says] Yours sincerely, Harold Spender." On the front-free endpaper is written: "To Lady Auckland Geddes, from The Author. / Nov. 1921 / In gratitude for the [???] and hospitably which [??] him to write Chapter XIV and the following chapters."
Sir Auckland and Lady Geddes are indeed mentioned in Chapter 14, with whom the author stayed with while in Washington, D.C., and they gave him a driving tour of the city which he describes in the chapter.
Condition: Hardcover; no dust jacket, spine ends bumped otherwise very minor apparent outer wear. Slight darkening to the endpapers, otherwise interior is clean and unmarked. Binding is firm.
