America: The origin of her present conflict; her prospect for the slave, and her claim for anti-slavery sympathy;
illustrated by incidents of travel, during a tour in the summer of 1863, throughout the United States, from the eastern boundaries of Maine to the Mississippi
by James William Massie

Title on spine: Anti-Slavery Mission to America

London: John Snow, 35, Paternoster Row.
First edition, 1864

Missing the map.

Condition: Hardcover. Cover boards have scuffing, spine faded, corners bumped and rubbed. The front endpapers have a few marks and a monogram that presumably served as a bookplate, the back inside cover has some pencil that has been erased, and a small binder's ticket for Bone & Son in London, which, according to the British Museum website, operated from 1855-1867. At least in the back half, the sections remain uncut along the upper edge. On the whole pages remain bright and unmarked, however on pages 174/175 a newspaper clipping has been stored that has discolored the pages (not nearly so old as the book). Binding feels fairly loose; at several places you can see the stitching. Binding does remain secure, however.

A Scottish perspective on the American Civil War and the issue of slavery in America.
