Inscription on the ffep reads: "Presented to Henry Adams, by his clerks, James E. Curly, Channing D. DeFrate, Timothy J. Dooley, Michael F. Murphy, Dec. 25, 1905". This would be Henry Brooks Adams (1838-1918), descendant of two American presidents, and author of the nine volume set The History of the United States 1801-1817 and in 1907 published the autobiography The Education of Henry Adams. Condition: Hardcover; no dust jacket. Ex-library with white-out notation on spine and white remnants of tape, a couple library stamps within and short bibliographic notation on copyright page, otherwise the book appears to be unmarked. Upper page edges gilt. Cover boards have minor to moderate scuffing, corners a bit bumped, some slight tearing near the upper spine. Front and back hinge reinforced to some degree with document repair tape, as is the page preceding the frontis. Smudge on half-title page. Fully illustrated and frontis retains tissue guard. Binding on the whole remains secure.
