The Encyclopedia of Jazz
by Leonard Feather
foreword by Duke Ellington
New York: Horizon Press
Stated second printing, 1956.
SIGNED by jazz legends Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, and James Woody.
Belafonte's signature is found on the half-title page (he's not actually mentioned in the book that I can find), and Dizzy Gillespie on page 164, on his photo. James Woody signed on the fore-edges of page 158 bleeding onto page 160 (also partly visible on the attached Dizzy photos).
Contains a wealth of photos in black and white.
Condition: Oversize hardcover, no dust jacket. Cover boards have some scuffing, particularly to edges and corners, spine faded, and cover cloth tearing along spine edge. Previous owner name to ffep--Dorothy King (which Dizzy's inscription is "To Dorothy, best wishes") and a small pencil note on the inside cover "Tiny Bradshaw - Jersey Bounce". The interior is otherwise unmarked except for that and the signatures. Binding is split/hinge is visible at the half-title page, but that seems to be more of an aesthetic defect than a structural one, because the binding remains nice and secure overall, and would be a quick fix for a book repairer.
