by W.E. Burghardt du Bois

du Bois dedicated the book "to my granddaughter du Bois Williams on her sixth birthday in the hope that her eyes may one day see some of the things I dream." Yolande du Bois Irvin died in November 2021 at the age of 89, so she would certainly have seen the rise of the Civil Rights movement all the way through Obama's presidency.
